Sustainable Agriculture for a Stronger Rural Economy

Most rural households in low- and middle-income countries still depend on farming for their livelihood, yet decades of input-intensive intensification have worn down the soils, water and biodiversity that farm income ultimately rests on. Drawing on the agroecology, food security and rural livelihoods literature, this review sets out what the evidence shows about the connection between sustainable farming practices and the strength of the rural economy. Crop diversification, integrated soil and water management and organic production tend to hold or raise farm profitability while cutting input costs and environmental exposure and these gains grow larger where farmers can reach extension services and non-farm income sources. A meta-analysis covering 55 crops on five continents found organic systems averaging 10 to 18% lower yields than conventional ones, yet 22 to 35% more profitable once price premiums are factored in (Crowder & Reganold, 2015). Persistent constraints thin credit access, weak market linkages and patchy extension coverage still limit how widely these gains are shared. The review closes with policy directions for building a stronger rural economy on sustainable farming systems.
