Abstract

Traditional health sciences have played a significant role in maintaining human health and well-being across civilizations for centuries. In India, Ayurveda, Yoga, medicinal plant traditions, indigenous nutrition practices, and other systems of traditional healthcare represent a rich body of knowledge developed through long-term observation, experience, and interaction with nature. These systems view health not merely as the absence of disease but as a dynamic state of physical, mental, social, environmental, and spiritual balance. Ayurveda provides a comprehensive framework for understanding individual constitution, lifestyle, diet, prevention, and therapeutic care, while Yoga offers physical, psychological, and contemplative practices that promote holistic well-being. Medicinal plants and traditional nutritional practices have also contributed substantially to community healthcare and continue to provide important resources for contemporary pharmaceutical and biomedical research. The growing burden of non-communicable diseases, mental health challenges, lifestyle-related disorders, and environmental stress has renewed global interest in preventive and holistic approaches to health. Traditional health knowledge can contribute to addressing these challenges by emphasizing healthy lifestyles, personalized care, dietary discipline, physical activity, mental balance, and sustainable relationships between humans and nature. However, the integration of traditional health sciences with modern research requires careful scientific investigation, appropriate methodological approaches, ethical safeguards, quality control, and respect for traditional knowledge holders. This chapter examines Ayurveda and medicinal plants, traditional healthcare and nutrition, Yoga and holistic well-being, and the relationship between traditional health knowledge and modern scientific research. It discusses the philosophical foundations and practical relevance of these systems while exploring opportunities and challenges associated with their contemporary application. The chapter argues that meaningful dialogue between traditional knowledge systems and modern science can contribute to the development of more inclusive, preventive, sustainable, and person-centered healthcare models. Such integration should not involve the uncritical acceptance or rejection of either system but should encourage evidence-based research, interdisciplinary collaboration, cultural sensitivity, biodiversity conservation, and ethical benefit-sharing
