Background:
In the vibrant district of Nagaon in Assam ornamental fish farming has found a remarkable champion in Mr Partha Rathi Hazarika. His story is not just about personal success but also about community transformation and the promotion of indigenous aquatic biodiversity. Assam is widely recognised as a hotspot for ornamental fishes in India with nearly 195 species naturally available in its rivers, ponds and wetlands. This biodiversity holds immense potential for ornamental fish breeding and trade both within India and abroad.
Mr Hazarika’s interest in ornamental fish began during his childhood when he would spend hours by the water bodies near his home in Aathgaon catching small fish with great excitement. He would keep them in glass jars and watch their movements with fascination. Over time his collection grew but so did his challenges. Without proper knowledge of aquarium management, many of his fish did not survive for long. The lack of information on feeding, filtration, water chemistry and disease management meant that his early attempts at fish keeping often ended in disappointment. Yet his passion did not fade. In fact, every loss only strengthened his determination to learn how to keep these delicate creatures alive and thriving.
His childhood hobby slowly evolved into a vision to one day create a business that would not only supply ornamental fish but also breed and conserve indigenous species while generating livelihoods for others.
